2009 Presentations

"I invite you to explore these materials as starting points for your own journey, rather than as answers. Talk back, argue, and debate them; voice your insights, your experience. The teleconferences are like snapshots, one person's way of expressing how concepts might manifest. The deeper purpose of the materials is to support growth, consciousness, and pleasure." PL 119

PL 46: Authority An invitation to examine your relationship to authority. Ask yourself: am I willing to honestly see the truth about my relationship to authority? If there is any hesitation in your response, do not suppress it. Allow it as part of the truth about yourself. Allow any resistance to contribute to your self-knowing.

PL 72: Fear of Loving -- Three Aspects that Prevent Man from Loving  Explore the intricate push-pull of human nature, where you may resist opening to love. "Love is the one and only power. With it you are mighty, you are strong, you are safe. Without it you are poor, you are separate, you are in seclusion and in fear. But this knowledge cannot really help you unless and until you discover where, deep inside yourself, you cannot love; you do not want to love; and you do not know why this resistance to love exists."

PL 73: The Compulsion to Recreate and Overcome Childhood Hurts  Unresolved conflicts from our childhood compel us -- on a mostly unconscious level -- to find or create similar situations, in an attempt to resolve the pain that we experienced and the pain we saw inflicted on others. In addition to our primary intimate relationships, we may also experience this 'compulsion to recreate' with friends, co-workers, and authority figures.

PL 85 & 86: Self-Preservation and Procreation as Instincts in Conflict and in Distortion  These are my two favorite lectures.  They are relatively unknown, not easy to teach or set into charts.  Yet these were the keys that unlocked my understanding of Unity and Duality, the Idealized Self Image / Mask, Vicious Circles, Lower Self – just about every major Pathwork concept. Robert Fulghum wrote this formula for self-growth based upon our instinctive verbal cues:

Uh-huh + Oh-wow + Uh-oh + Oh, God = Ah-hah!
Everyone has had an Ah-hah! moment, when a major life component suddenly becomes clear. Ah-hah! moments = conscious awareness of cause and effect.

PL 109: Restitution for Real Guilt  Justice, self-responsibility, and spiritual law -- what are our mutual obligations? What does caring for our brothers and sisters look like? False, exaggerated guilt is often used to distract us from the truth.  'Self-respect and self-assurance can only exist if you do not hide from your impaired integrity."

PL 130 & 185: Abundance and Acceptance; Mutuality

Abundance is an attitude, a state of mind. Like attracts like. 'Poverty consciousness' describes how we can unconsciously contribute energy to the very things we fear. The Pathwork Process focuses upon finding where we unconsciously believe what fear tells us, even if we consciously reject it.

PL 132: The Function of the Ego  A healthy Ego chooses to accept life and chooses to want to understand itself. A weak Ego tends to rely upon others and often takes on their point of view; overblown Egos prevent us from finding our way to the Real Self, by holding onto a social or material identity.

PL 143: Unity and Duality  "The dualistic plane means that man sees, perceives, and experiences everything in opposites. The unified principle combines both opposites of the dualistic plane. Few human beings transcend the dualistic plane and experience only occasionally a taste of the wide, limitless outlook, the wisdom and freedom of the unified plane. ... In the unified plane of consciousness, there are no opposites. Yet it is not the kind of good or the kind of right or the kind of life that comprises but one of the opposites of the dualistic planes. It transcends it and is of a completely different nature." PL 143

PL 160: Conciliation of Inner Split This is a powerful lecture about cultivating the  emotional maturity that needed in order to support accelerated spiritual development. Study materials include an example of a vicious circle that develops when we try too hard to resolve dualities. "A very deliberate and yet relaxed attempt must be made to feel the underlying causes of the outer results in your life."

PL 171 & PC10: Spiritual Law  Spiritual Law, like forces of nature (such as gravity), is impersonal, constant, and perfect - concepts that we do not associate with human relationships and life circumstances. We experience authority and justice through the lens of Human Law, which is seldom free of agenda, ideology, and distortion. This can encourage attitudes of rebellion and resentment, along with a fear of being judged.

PL 182: Meditation for Three Voices & Child, Adult Ego and Soul Self, Chapter 4 of The Undefended Self by Susan Thesenga. Encouraging greater consciousness around different aspects of ourselves can be likened to the process of Voice Dialogue©. It is often taught using three chairs or seating positions, and the process can be expanded to include many  combinations.

PL 196: Commitment; Cause and Effect  “When you can truly see cause and effect relationships in your life, not only will you be motivated to want to give up negative attitudes and intentions and to institute positive intentionality, you will also gain awareness and emotional and spiritual maturity.  Maturity is to a great extent the ability to put cause and effect together.  The ability to put cause and effect together also indicates the degree of awareness an entity has reached through his development.”  PL 196   When we ignore or misrepresent the connection between cause and effect, we disempower ourselves.  Consequences appear random and inexplicable, encouraging despair and self-doubt.

PL 207: The Spiritual Significance of Sexuality "The sexual force is an expression of consciousness reaching for fusion. " yet in addition "The movement toward fusion on the emotional level must be expressed in feeling- exchange if the fusion is to take place. ... Mental fusion exists obviously on the level of the thinking mind. ... Spiritual fusion is always a natural result of the fusion on the physical, emotional, and mental levels. For most human beings it is still inconceivable to combine sexuality with spirituality. This concept is bound to change soon. Satisfying relationships with others are therefore always also a mirror of the degree of inner unification for the individual. If you cannot find union with others, you are in disunity within yourself.”

PL 248: The Three Principles of Evil  Explore the qualities of Reason, Will and Emotion personality types in terms of how they may become attracted to the negative principles of Materialism, Separation and Half-Truths. The concept of materialism is sometimes easier to grasp in terms of needing to see truth in some form of manifested evidence - proof of some kind.

General Concepts:

US3: The Observer Self  Chapter 3 of The Undefended Self by Susan Thesenga.  The goal in developing an inner Observer Self is to awaken the inner teacher/healer who is ever-present and ready to guide us, using the tools of objectivity and detachment with love and compassion. The ability to observe ourselves objectively and compassionately is the single most important skill to develop in walking the spiritual path.  Distortion, false beliefs and negativity result in pain and disharmony.  If we blame ourselves, fear that we are inadequate, or label our imperfections as bad or evil we can lose the best witness we have -- our own inner knowing. Feedback from others may contain distortions or feel threatening, causing us to hide behind our defenses instead of opening to the grain of truth in every human interaction. How can we discern the energy of the Observer Self as distinct from the Ego or other inner voices?
